LA28 confirms venue for Para powerlifting

As LA28 approaches the two-year milestone of the 2028 Paralympic Opening Ceremony on August 15, final updates to the Paralympic venue plan have been confirmed, including the announcement of Para powerlifting competition venue at Peacock Theater in the DTLA Zone, reaffirming the original bid venue. 

This finalisation was made possible by a scheduling shift and venue share with goalball, which will now take place in Peacock Theater across Days -2 through Day 6, 13 to 21 August, 2028, allowing the competition to begin prior to the Opening Ceremony without eliminating any athletes before the Games officially begin. Para Powerlifting will then take place during the second week across Days 9-12 of LA28, 24 to 27 August. Paralympic planning with Games stakeholders and delivery partners will continue in August with NPC Open Days. 

Peacock Theater is located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles and holds one of the largest indoor stages in the United States. It was opened in 2007 and hosts annually dozens of events from award shows to televised productions, conventions and sporting events, offering an epic stage for Games viewing in 2028.

Alongside Para powerlifting and goalball at the Paralympic Games, the venue will also be the home of boxing preliminary stages and weightlifting during the Olympic Games. The Paralympics will take place in Los Angeles for the first time in 2028, marking the third time the city hosts the Olympics. 
Para powerlifting has been part of the Paralympic Games medal event programme since New York 1984. Women’s events were introduced at Sydney 2000.  

The sport will once again feature full gender parity, continuing a standard first achieved at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and maintained at Paris 2024. The LA28 programme mirrors the balanced structure seen in Paris, with 10 men’s and 10 women’s bodyweight categories, ensuring equal competitive opportunities for athletes across all classes. 

The last edition in Paris had 176 athletes from 60 countries in action, with China topping the medals table and 24 nations achieving at least one podium finish. Eleven 11 world records were set at Paris 2024.
