Johanna Sossa and Johana Martinez have been chosen as Americas ‘Athlete of the Month’ for January after receiving 53 per cent of the public vote.

The Colombians led their national wheelchair tennis team to victory against Mexico in the Americas qualification and advanced into the World Team Cup finals, set to take place in Israel between 13 and 18 May.

Alpine skier Frederique Turgeon ended second with 38 per cent of the public vote. The Canadian sealed one silver and two bronze at her maiden World Championships in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, and Sella Nevea, Italy, just weeks after the death of her father.

Argentinian wheelchair tennis player Gustavo Fernandez, who won the 2019 Australian Open, and USA’s alpine skier Thomas Walsh, who took his first two World Championship medals, were also nominated.

The nominations were compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) from across the continent.
