Meet Gulf, the seahorse mascot of Kocaeli 2026

When Europe’s best Para swimmers arrive in Kocaeli in September, they will be welcomed by a very special local resident: Gulf, the mascot of the Kocaeli 2026 World Para Swimming European Championships – a resilient hero of the Izmit Bay from antiquity to today. 

Nestled in the heart of the Marmara Sea, Kocaeli – known known in antiquity as Nicomedia – holds a deep-rooted maritime heritage spanning thousands of years. During the Roman Empire, the mythical seahorse (Hippocampus) appeared on locally minted coins as a symbol of power, navigation and protection over the gulf's waves.

Today, the most charming representative of this ancient legacy, the unifying force of water, and the modern spirit of the city is the Kocaeli 2026 seahorse mascot Gulf, emerging proudly from the waves of the bay. Gulf is more than a sea creature; he is a living bridge connecting Kocaeli's ancient history, seafaring spirit, and forward-looking future.

The 2026 European Championships will take place at the Gebze Olympic Swimming Pool from 7 to 12 September and will mark the eighth edition of the competition.

The most recent Euros were held in Madeira, Portugal in 2024. Italy topped the European medal standings with 26 gold and 63 podium finishes. Turkiye claimed two titles and 12 medals in total.
