Teams Shine at Singapore's Boccia Invitational Open18.08.2008
Shortly before the start of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, the 2nd Singapore Boccia Invitational Open 2008 were recently held from 30 July to 2 August in Singapore at the Jurong East Sports Hall.
This is the second time Singapore has hosted the Boccia Open. The first was held last year and only saw the participation of four countries. This year the event saw a tremendous rise in participation with nine countries competing, including Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Macau, Republic of Korea, Thailand and Singapore.
Hong Kong dominated on the individual level by clinching first place in both the BC2 and BC4 classifications. Players Yau Wai Yan and Leung Yuk Win from Hong Kong took first and second place in the BC4 class respectively. Player Hoi Ying Kwok from team Hong Kong took first place in the BC2 class.
Tang U Kei from Macau clinched first place in the BC1 class followed by Mei Yee Leung also from Hong Kong who came in second. Team Thailand dominated the BC3 class by clinching the top three positions.
In the category pairing two individuals, teams had to compete in two different classes, BC3 and BC4. Thailand took first place in the BC3 class followed by Hong Kong and Singapore who came in second and third respectively. For BC4, Hong Kong clinched first place followed by Chinese Taipei.
In the Team Category, Malaysia clinched first place, with Hong Kong and Japan in the following positions. Singapore managed a close fourth.
The medals were given out at the Closing Ceremony Dinner which was graced by Mr. Tan Ju Seng, President of the Singapore National Paralympic Council.
The competition was organized by the Singapore Disability Sports Council and aims to not only enhance international relations and friendships, but also to provide people with a disability the platform to compete on an international level.
