Tunis 2026 Grand Prix: Preview and stars to watch at the fifth stop of the season

The World Para Athletics Grand Prix returns to one of its most traditional stops as Tunis hosts the fifth event of the season from 16–19 June.

A total of 484 athletes (360 men and 124 women) from 58 nations, led by a star-studded line-up, will descend on the Rades Athletics Stadium to showcase world-class speed, strength and determination as they battle for honours across four days of competition.

  Home stars

The centre of attention will be on the host nation which field the largest contingent of 40 Para athletes (26 men and 14 women), spearheaded by their Paralympic icon Raoua Tlili as she aims to stamp her dominance yet again. 

Tlili, the seven-time Paralympic champion, will be competing in the women's discus throw F41 and women’s shot put F41 events, in which she won two gold medals at Paris 2024. She will be joined by other Paralympic greats like Walid Ktila, the five-time Paralympic champion competing in just one race - men’s 100m T34. 

Ktila, who holds the world record in the men’s 100m event at 14.46 since 2019, had to settle for the silver in the event, in Paris.  

Four-time Paralympic champion Ibrahmi Maroua will be another home star to watch out for in Tunisia. Maroua will be competing in women's shot put and women’s club throw F32 – an event she picked up the gold in Paris and holds the world record at 29.36 set in Marrakech 2025. 

Other Paris 2024 medallists include are Amen Allah Tissaoui (gold medallist in the men's 1500m T37/T38 and bronze medallist in the men's 400m T37), Wajdi Boukhili (gold medallist in the men's 5000 m T12) and Ahmed Ben Moslah (silver medallist in the men's shot put F37).

Other African stars 

Morocco will add strength to the African representation as they bring a few of their Paralympic stars including Aymane El Haddaoui, competing in the men’s 100m T47 and 400m T47 race - an event he secured the gold medal in Paris.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic bronze medallist Hayat El Garaa’s presence should pose a challenge for Tlili in women's discus throw F41 event.

Algeria’s 22-member team will have the likes of Paralympic stars Sofia Djelal and Nassima Saifi. Djelal is the reigning Paralympic champion in women's shot put F57, an event Saifi has the bronze medal in Paris 2024 apart from her gold medal in women's discus throw F57.

International stars 

Among international stars, the focus will be on Ukraine who bring in a galaxy of stars including several reigning Paralympic champions in their 23-team contingent. 

Double Paralympic gold medallist Ihor Tsvietov will compete in the men's 100m T35 and 200 m T35 events – the same events he clinched gold medals in Paris. He will be joined by Oleksandr Yarovyi, who claimed the men's shot put F20 gold at Stade de France.

The Ukraine's women's line-up appears relatively stronger as they aim to add several medals to their tally. Two-time Paralympic gold medallist Anastasiia Moskalenko will compete in the women's club throw F32 and women’s shot put F32 - an event she won the gold in Paris.

Another Paris 2024 champion Mariia Pomazan will aim to top the podium in the women's shot put F35.

In the tracks, Nataliia Kobzar, who won the women's 400 m T37 and has a silver in the women's 200 m T37, will aim to dominate her events. Meanwhile, Yuliia Shuliar will aim to extend her dominance in the women's 400 m T20 event.

Hosts of the next World Para Athletics Championships, Uzbekistan arrives in Tunis with the second largest contingent (30 athletes). Their squad will feature a strong line-up led by their Paris 2024 gold medallists Marufkhujaev Kudratillokhon (men's shot put F37), Odilov Yorkinbek (men's javelin F57) and Yuldashev Tolibboy (men's discus throw F37), who also has a bronze medal in the men's shot put F37.

Paris 2024 champion in the women's javelin F54, Kurbanova Nurkhon will also be competing in Tunisia.
