OUR IMPACT

The Agitos Foundation was established in 2012. Since then, we have reached people around the globe through our programmes and through the distribution of over EUR 3.8 million in grants to 179 projects that have expanded the capacity of our member nations and sports.

Esperança Gicaso’s vision impairment hasn’t stopped her to follow her dreams.

She had to overcome several barriers to pursue her studies and become a teacher at a primary school in Luanda, Angola, teaching Portuguese to young learners.

Some of them are not even aware that Esperança is also a sprinter who represented their country in two Paralympic Games and won two medals at the London 2017 World Para Athletics Championships.

‘Para athletics has helped me get rid of the stigma. My biggest dream is to be known internationally as a Paralympic medallist. I’m a determined person and my main objective in my sporting life is to be on the podium at the Paralympic Games in Japan.’

Esperança, whose name means ‘hope’ in Portuguese, was one of the athletes we have supported in 2018 through our programmes. Inspiring stories like hers are what drive our work on behalf of the one billion people with disabilities – the world’s largest minority.

Para sport frequently provides a source of hope and rehabilitation and the Paralympics have been a proven catalyst for changing society’s attitudes towards people with disabilities.

With our funding and expertise, in 2018 we were able to:

•    Offer training opportunities to more than 550 athletes, coaches and classifiers in every region of the world
•    Reach more than 138,000 children and 3,800 teachers in five countries with our I’mPOSSIBLE education programme
•    Fund 32 projects through our Grant Support Programme, which included activities with refugees and asylum seekers
