Official website of the Paralympic Movement
Athletes from more than 80 countries participate in the sport, which is governed by the IPC using the International Swimming Federation’s (FINA) modified rules. These modifications include optional starting platforms and in-water starts for some athletes or the use of signals or “tappers” for those with visual impairments. No prostheses or assistive devices are permitted in the pool.

Swimming has been one of the main Paralympic sports since the first Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960.
Competitors test their skills in freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and medley events and are classified based on their functional ability to perform each stroke.
