Since the 1990s, the city has played host to many international sporting, political and cultural events including the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the Formula One Grand Prix.

Around 200 athletes from 30 countries are expected to gather in the cultural, financial and economic centre of Malaysia for the 2013 IPC Powerlifting Asian Open Championships in Kuala Lumpur from 3-7 November.

Since the 1990s, the city has played host to many international sporting, political and cultural events including the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the Formula One Grand Prix, as well as the 2010 IPC Powerlifting World Championships.

Other annual sport events hosted by the city include the Tower Run, the Tower International BASE Jump Merdeka Circuit and the Kuala Lumpur International Marathon. Kuala Lumpur is also one of the stages of the Tour de Langkawi cycling race and hosts the annual Malaysia Open Super Series badminton tournament.

In addition, Kuala Lumpur is home to the tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers, which have become an iconic symbol of Malaysia's futuristic development.

The competition will be held at the Titiwangsa Stadium.
