The Australian Paralympic Team uniform for the London 2012 Paralympic Games was unveiled today (1 May), as Paralympians took to the catwalk in Sydney as part of Fashion Week Australia.

The uniform features ceremonial wear designed by iconic Australian brand R.M.Williams, as well as competition and casual wear designed by leading sports performance brand 2XU.

The entire range was officially launched at Circular Quay’s Overseas Passenger Terminal by the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC), 120 days before the uniform is worn in front of the eyes of the world at the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony.

The APC will send its best prepared Australian team ever to the London Games, where more than 4,200 athletes from 160 countries will contest 20 sports over 11 days in front of an expected global audience of 4 billion viewers.

Jason Hellwig, Chef de Mission of the 2012 Australian Paralympic Team and APC Chief Executive Officer, said the APC was proud to work with R.M.Williams and 2XU to deliver such an outstanding uniform.

“The APC gave R.M.Williams and 2XU the task to ensure members of the 2012 Australian Paralympic Team look and feel their best by providing a uniform that rises above the world’s elite,” Hellwig said.

“This was to be done while staying true to values Australia’s Paralympians have held dear throughout the proud history of the Paralympic movement – inspiration, courage, equality and prestige.

“I’m delighted to say that this task has been accomplished.

“As Australia’s leading high performance sports brand and a true world leader when it comes to innovative technical design, 2XU represented the ideal competition and casual apparel partner for the APC and the Australian 2012 Paralympic Team.

“Our association with R.M.Williams has also been a valuable one. R.M.Williams, the bush outfitter, is an iconic Australian brand famous for its high quality boots, clothing and accessories. The company has now applied its technical expertise in design and production to manufacture complete outfits for a diverse group of athletes and officials,” Hellwig said.

The uniform was proudly modelled today by some of Australia’s finest Paralympic athletes including Matt Cowdrey, Annabelle Williams (swimming), Jessica Gallagher, Jack Swift, Kelly Cartwright, Carlee Beattie, Evan O'Hanlon, Kurt Fearnley (athletics), Ryley Batt (wheelchair rugby), Jayme Paris (cycling), Tyan Taylor (goalball), Melissa Tapper (table tennis), Grant Mizens, Kylie Gauci (wheelchair basketball) and Liesl Tesch (sailing).
