Being an important part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Transfer of Knowledge Programme, the Official Debrief of the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games is currently taking place (24 to 27 November) in London, Great Britain. The four-day event provides a unique opportunity to transfer the key lessons learned by the Beijing 2008 Organizing Committee (BOCOG) to the next Games Organizing Committees of Vancouver 2010, London 2012, Sochi 2014, the Candidate Cities of 2016 and other representatives of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.
The debriefing involves around 300 participants, including International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven, IPC CEO Xavier Gonzalez and several IPC staff members as well as Paralympic experts and consultants.
Said Sir Philip: “The official Games debrief gives future Games organizers the chance to learn from the experience, challenges and knowledge of the Beijing Organizing Committee. It is a great opportunity to analyze the success of the Games and to look behind the scenes.”
In a half-day session dedicated to Paralympic Stakeholders, the International Paralympic Committee had the opportunity to review the general success factors and challenges of the Paralympic Games and to highlight the legacies, e.g., accessibility and sports development. The services to each stakeholder group (athletes, National Paralympic Committees, International Paralympic Sport Federations, media, sponsors, Paralympic Family, spectators) were also analyzed. Representatives from various Olympic and Paralympic stakeholder groups, e.g., representatives from the International Federations, the sponsors, the media, dignitaries, spectators and the wider general public, are present to participate actively in the meetings, in order to share their experiences of the Beijing 2008 Games.
