Record Coverage in Canada Confirmed for Vancouver Paralympics

An unprecedented 50 hours of high definition (HD) television coverage in both English and French languages is on tap for the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.

By IPC

Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium is planning to deliver the record programming, which will be multi-platform comprising television, radio, digital and print. This will be the first time that the Games will be produced entirely in HD by a Canadian rightsholder.

The Paralympic Games in Vancouver each day will be featured in a 90-minute programme, which highlights the day’s activities, results and updated medal standings. Airing in English on CTV, TSN or Rogers Sportsnet, and in French on RDS or RIS Info in Sports, several live events will also be part of the major broadcast.

The Vancouver Paralympics will also have a strong showing during the Consortium’s Olympic coverage. Features on Paralympians will regularly air in English and French, which celebrate the athletes’ skills and achievements. Additionally, a one-hour documentary about the Paralympic Winter Games, the Paralympic Movement and the host country’s athletes will air on 28 February, the last day of the Olympics.

The coverage of the Paralympic Winter Games is designed to reach the widest possible audience. Digital coverage for example, will be prevalent on CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca leading up to and during the Games, with athlete features, results, profiles, photos, video, an interactive medal tracker and user generated content.

The Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games will take place from 12-21 March 2010, with approximately 600 athletes from 45 countries expected to compete in five sports: Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Sledge Hockey and Wheelchair Curling.

Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium is a unique relationship between leading media conglomerates CTV Inc. and Rogers Media Inc., which together will provide unprecedented coverage and consumer choice in English, French and multi-languages on multiple platforms for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the London 2012 Games. Official brands include CTV, TSN, RDS, RIS Info Sports, Rogers Sportsnet, OMNI, OLN, TQS, APTN, ATN, CTVOlympics.ca, RDSolympiques.ca, The Globe and Mail and select Rogers radio stations across the country.
