Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award
14.03.2010
Two gold medals weighing 75 grams will be presented at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony to two athletes, a male and a female who best exemplify the spirit of the games. This award is for Paralympians who not only achieve sporting excellence, but also exceptionally inspire and excite the world.
The Chefs de Mission of all participating countries can nominate two candidates, a male and a female, for this award regardless of the outcome of their competition. The selection committee, consisting of IPC Governing Board members of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), will decide the winner on 19 March.
The Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award is named after South Korean Dr. Whang Youn Dai, the forefront advocate for persons with disabilities for over 50 years. She contributed her life for the development of Paralympic Sport around the world.
At the 1988 Paralympic Summer Games in Seoul, the IPC recognized her life-long contribution to the Paralympic Movement and thus established the award. Since then, this award was presented at every Paralympic Games to one male and one female athlete.
The award will be presented at the Closing Ceremony by Dr. Whang, Youn Dai and either by the President of IPC, Sir Philip Craven or the Vice-President of the IPC, Greg Hartung.
