Yui Kamiji wins eighth successive title of 2017

Japan’s Yui Kamiji comfortably secured her eighth successive women’s title of 2017 after beating USA’s Dana Mathewson in the final of the Toyota Open International in Lille, France. The world No. 1 completed a 6-0, 6-2 victory, having lost just three games throughout the tournament.

The win on June 18 means her only loss in a singles competition so far this season remains a defeat at the first Super Series event of 2017 in Sydney, Australia. Since then, Kamiji has remained unbeaten over 28 matches.

In the men’s singles Gustavo Fernandez made it four titles for 2017 after beating home favourite and defending champion Nicolas Peifer 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. It’s a quick recovery for Argentina’s world No. 4, who lost out in the French Open final at Roland Garros a week earlier.

The result also ends Peifer’s quest for a hattrick of titles in Lille, and extends Fernandez’s head-to record advantage over Peifer this year to four wins and one loss.

South Africa’s Lucas Sithole took his second quad singles title of the year, and only his second one since 2015, following a hard-fought 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 victory over the Netherlands’ 17-year-old Sam Schroder.

Schroder did not finish the day empty handed though, as he partnered Sithole to the quad doubles title. At the same time, Peifer and Sweden’s Stefan Olsson won the men’s doubles, whilst Mathewson and France’s Charlotte Famin claimed the women’s equivalent.

The world’s best wheelchair tennis players will now line-up to compete at the BNP Paribas Open de France, the fourth Super Series event of the year, from 20-25 June.
