Alpine skiing
At the Paralympic Games, alpine skiiers can compete in five different events: downhill, super-G, super combined, slalom and giant slalom.
Competition is for those with a physical disability such as a spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, les autres conditions and visual impairment. Athletes compete in three categories based on their functional ability, and a results calculation system allows athletes with different impairments to compete against one another.
Skiers with visual impairments are guided through the course by sighted guides, who employ voice signals to indicate the course to follow. Athletes with physical disabilities use equipment that is adapted to their needs, whether it be a single ski, sit-ski or orthopedic aids.
