IPC President to address major US conference

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Sir Philip Craven will be in San Diego, USA, on Friday (14 November) to give a keynote address at the 2014 American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Annual Assembly, the world’s largest annual gathering of physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians.
Over 2,500 physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians are expected to attend the Assembly and Sir Philip will talk about the growth and future direction of the Paralympic Movement during the half-day Paralympic Sports Medicine and Science Symposium.
During his hour long talk, the IPC President will cover the rapid growth of the Paralympic Movement and Paralympic Games, from 1948 and the introduction of para-sport at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Great Britain, through to the present day and the success of the London 2012 and Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games in becoming the world’s third biggest sporting event.
Earlier this year the IPC celebrated its 25th anniversary, and although Sir Philip will address what challenges now lie ahead for the Paralympic Movement, he will also talk about the benefits of practicing sport and in particular for people with an impairment.
Sir Philip Craven said: “This Assembly is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the Paralympic Movement and its benefits to many of America’s leading physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians.
“Although I’ll be concentrating on the basic principles which drive the Paralympic Movement, I’ll also be discussing how sport and physical activity have a major role to play in the recovery from a serious injury or illness.”
Also speaking during the Paralympic Sports Medicine and Science Symposium will be Anne Hart, the Chairperson the IPC Classification Committee and Dr. Cheri Blauwet, Chairperson of the IPC Medical Committee.
