Whitehead receives Allianz Athlete of the Month for July

Great Britain’s Richard Whitehead has received the Allianz Athlete of the Month honour for July following his world record performances.

Whitehead smashed his own world record for the second time in two weeks, winning the 200m T42 in 23.03 at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix Final in London, Great Britain.

The reigning Paralympic and world champion received 45 per cent of the public vote. Ukrainian wheelchair fencer Anton Datsko came in second with 34 per cent. The USA’s Para triathlete Grace Norman was third (9 per cent), followed by British wheelchair tennis player Gordon Reid (7 per cent) and another British athlete in Libby Clegg (5 per cent).

February – Andrey Smirnov, Russia, wheelchair curling

March – Stephen McGuire, Great Britain, boccia

April – Carlos Serrano, Colombia, swimming

May – Shelby Watson, Great Britain, athletics

June – Elena Krawzow, Germany, swimming
