Shortlist for November 2017 Allianz Athlete of the Month

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has revealed the shortlist for the Allianz Athlete of the Month for November, and the public can now vote for the winner on www.paralympic.org.

The nominations are:

Jungjun Kim and Sam Seop Lee, South Korea, badminton

On their home court, Kim and Lee teamed up to win the men’s doubles WH 1-2 gold medal at the 2017 Badminton World Federation (BWF) Para Badminton World Championships. They also dominated their respective singles competitions, Kim winning the men’s WH 2 and Lee the WH 1 for their third straight time.

Mike Shea, USA, snowboard

The US athlete left the World Para Snowboard World Cup in Landgraaf, Netherlands, with a gold and silver medal in the men’s banked slalom SB-LL2. His gold came in a thrilling tiebreaker, in which he beat reigning world champion Matti Suur-Hamari.

Nick Taylor and David Wagner, USA, wheelchair tennis

The duo won their 10th UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters title, becoming the first doubles partnership to take their tally of Doubles Masters titles into double figures. Taylor and Wagner bounced back from losing their round-robin pool match against top seeds Antony Cotterill and Andy Lapthorne to beat the Brits when they met them again in the final.

Manuela Schar, Switzerland, athletics

Schar rounded off the 2017 marathon season at the top of the Abbott World Marathon Majors leaderboard by winning the New York Marathon. She had a convincing victory, getting the better of the USA’s five-time champion Tatyana McFadden.

Bebe Vio, Italy, wheelchair fencing

Vio successfully defended her women’s category B foil gold medal in her home World Championships. It was her sixth successive tournament victory, and she also helped Italy win the women’s team foil gold medal.

The public has until 12:00 (CEST) on Wednesday (13 December) to vote for the athlete they want to be the Allianz Athlete of the Month for November 2017 via the www.paralympic.org homepage.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) and International Federations (IFs).

The 2017 Allianz Athlete of the Month winners so far are:

• January – Jeroen Kampschreur, Netherlands, alpine skiing

• February – Veronica Vadovicova, Slovakia, shooting

• March – Maria Paula Barrera, Colombia, swimming

• April – Jean Niringiyimana, Rwanda, taekwondo

• May – Evan Medell, USA, taekwondo

• June – Alfie Hewett, Great Britain, wheelchair tennis

• July – Petrucio Ferreira, Brazil, athletics

• August - U Cheol Park, South Korea, wheelchair rugby

• September – Zahra Nemati, Iran, archery

• October – Ivan Sivak, Ukraine, Para dance sport
