Fleur Jong shines at L’Hospitalet, sends strong message for World Championships

Dutch Paralympic champion Fleur Jong rose to the occasion at the 20th edition of the Para Athletics Meeting of L’Hospitalet in Spain on Saturday (17 May) .

One of the stars of the traditional Para athletics event, Jong equalled her T62 world record in her first attempt (6.74m) to win the women’s long jump and send a strong message ahead of the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, India, this September.

The Dutch is no stranger to success at the meet held in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. Three years ago, Jong set a long jump T62 world record at L’Hospitalet. She’s a two-time Paralympic champion (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024) and two-time world champion in the event (Paris 2023 and Kobe 2024).

There was another world record set on Saturday with Spain’s Judith Tortosa in the women’s 400m T72 (1:17.50). Tortosa is a two-time World Championships medallist in the women’s 100m T72, with a bronze from Paris 2023 and a silver from Kobe 2024.

 

Rehm wins again

A four-time Paralympic champion and seven-time world champion in the men’s long jump, Germany’s Markus Rehm (T64) was another Para athletics star attending the 20th edition of the Meeting of L’Hospitalet. 

In his first international event of the season, Rehm registered two valid jumps to win with 7.98m, while his compatriot and two-time world champion Leon Schafer (T63) finished second (6.99m).

Another top German athlete to take home wins was Johannes Floors in the men’s 100m (10.96) and men’s 200m (21.12) multi-class races. 

Two-time Paralympic medallist Adiaratou Iglesias (T13) led the home victories with gold in the women’s 100m (12.97) and 200m (26.63).

Local athletes set several new national records, including Pere Antoni Gomila in the men’s 100m T47 (11.38) and long jump T47 (6.19m), and Fiona Pinar (T64) in the women’s 100m (13.44) and shot put (9.25m).
