ANTI-DOPING IN PARA POWERLIFTING

Promoting and protecting the health of Para athletes and the integrity of sport is a top priority for World Para Powerlifting.  Anyone found guilty of using or providing doping products will be held accountable in accordance with the rules.

To try and ensure a level playing field for all athletes in the sport, World Para Powerlifting is bound by and complies fully with the IPC Anti-Doping Code.

The aims of the IPC Anti-Doping Code, which is fully compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code, are:

•    To protect the athlete’s right to participate in doping free sport and thus promote health, fairness and equality for athletes worldwide.

•    To ensure harmonised, coordinated and effective anti-doping programmes on the international and national level aimed at the detection, deterrence and prevention of doping.

Anti-doping rules, like competition rules, are sport rules governing the conditions under which sport is played. All participants (athletes and athlete support personnel) accept these rules as a condition of participation and are presumed to have agreed to comply with the IPC Anti-Doping Code.

The anti-doping programme for World Para Powerlifting is managed by the IPC who is responsible for the testing programme of athletes, processing of Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs), case management and delivery of anti-doping education.

Further information can be found on the IPC website

THERAPEUTIC USE EXEMPTIONS (TUEs)

Athletes, like all others, may have illnesses or conditions that require them to take particular medications.

It is an athlete’s responsibility to ensure that any medication they take therapeutically to treat an illness or condition does not include a submits included in the Prohibited list.

Athletes may however sometimes have to use a medication therapeutically which contains a substance which is on the Prohibited list. It is important that understand the TUE rules and how and when they need to apply to be granted a TUE which, if granted, provides the authorisation to take the required medicine without contravening the rules.

TUE Application Form

Where do you need to apply for a TUE?

Step 1: Determine what level athlete you are. Click here to see if your name is on the List of International Level Athletes.

Step 2: If your name is on the list, you should apply directly to the IPC. Submit your completed TUE application with supporting medical documentation to tue@paralympic.org. Submissions must be in English.

Or, if your name is not on the list, submit your TUE application to your National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO). Click here for a list of NADOS

Step 3: Do you already have a valid TUE approval and are trying to determine if the IPC will automatically recognise it? Click here to see the IPC’s current automatic recognition rules.
