Day One of Para-Cycling Track Worlds Recap

Great Britain’s Sarah Storey stole the show on the opening day of the 2012 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles, California in the USA on Thursday (9 February), racing to gold in the women’s 500m Time Trial C5 final.

Storey, a world and Paralympic champion on the track, completed the distance in a time of 37.37 to beat USA’s Greta Neimanas and Jennifer Schuble for the title.

The Netherlands’ Alijda Norbruis registered a time of 43.10 in the 500m Time Trial C2 final to claim gold ahead of China’s Yin He and USA’s Allison Jones.

In the 500m Time Trial C4, China’s Jianping Ruan had no problem finishing first (38.97), while Australia’s Susan Powell and Canada’s Marie-Claude Molnar came in second and third, respectively.

Ireland took the title in the women’s B Individual Pursuit 3K, and Australia finished first in the men’s B Individual Pursuit 4K.

The competition continues on Friday at Carson’s Home Depot Centre with the 3km and 4km Pursuits and the 1km Time Trial.

Para-Cycling will be one of 20 sports featured at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
