Gerard, Lauro and Laudan Win Bavarian Indoor titles

First ITF 2 Series tournament of 2012 took place in Nuremberg, Germany 19 Mar 2012

Joachim Gerard of Belgium, Italy’s Marianna Lauro and Maximilian Laudan of Germany took the main draw singles honours at Europe’s first International Tennis Federation (ITF) 2 Series tournament of 2012 when the Bavarian Indoor Open, a part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, came to a close on Saturday (17 March) in Nuremberg, Germany.

Third seed Gerard took his tally of senior main draw singles titles into double figures as he successfully defended his title, edging out Dutch top seed Tom Egberink 6-4 6-4. Victory brought Gerard the third ITF 2 Series title of his career.

Lauro went into Saturday’s women’s singles final having won the Bavarian Open title on clay in 2011 and took her tally of singles titles to 13 as she added the Bavarian Indoor title with a 3-6 6-2 6-3 victory over top seed and home favourite Katharina Kruger.

In the quad singles 20-year-old Maximilian Laudan secured the biggest win of his career after coming through a close opening set against Japanese Takahiro Koga and going on to win 7-6, 6-1.

Meanwhile, Rody de Bie (NED) lifted the junior singles title. Second seed de Bie edged British top seed and reigning Junior Masters champion Alfie Hewett 7-6 in a tense opening set of the junior final before Hewett was forced to retire from the contest.
