Hosts Rwanda and Egypt claim African titles in Kigali

Regional Sitting Volleyball Championships conclude on 17 September 21 Sep 2017 By IPC and World ParaVolley

Hosts Rwanda and Egypt won the women’s and men’s events respectively, at the 2017 ParaVolley Africa Sitting Volleyball Championships, which took place in Kigali between 13-17 September.

The Rwandan female team rounded off a perfect tournament by winning all of their games against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt and Kenya without conceding a single set to maintain their dominance on the continental stage.

Two years ago, Rwanda won the inaugural women’s African Championships to become the continent’s first female sitting volleyball team to qualify for a Paralympic Games. They followed that up with an eighth place at Rio 2016.

At the same time, Paralympic bronze medallists Egypt captured the men’s title following a 3-0 victory over the hosts, successfully defending the African title from 2015.

Previously, Egypt had finished top of Group A after beating Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo 3-0, and had defeated Morocco 3-1 in the semi-finals.
