Three-time Paralympian Scott Rodgers, PLY, became the first active athlete and the first member of the Para fencing community to lead the USA Fencing Board of Directors.

Rodgers, who won bronze at Athens 2004, was elected as chair of the Board of Directors on 24 October. He will guide USA Fencing and Para fencing as they build towards LA28 and Brisbane 2032 – and beyond.

“It is an honour and a privilege to have been elected by my peers as the chairman of the board for USA Fencing. It is an amazing organisation that puts on some of the best fencing events in the world,” he said.

“I am excited to work with my colleagues and all the members of USA Fencing to continue to improve and grow our sport and set us up for success well beyond my tenure as Chair.”

Rodgers is believed to be the second Paralympian to lead a US national sport governing body, following Joel Rosinbum, PLY, at USA Triathlon — a milestone that underscores USA Fencing’s commitment to elevating athlete voices and expanding Para fencing opportunities nationwide.

He will serve through the Board’s Annual Meeting in fall 2027 (or at the pleasure of the Board).

Rodgers, who was introduced to wheelchair fencing in 1993, made his Paralympic debut at Sydney 2000. He won bronze at Athens 2004 — the most recent Paralympic medal for USA Fencing. Earlier this year, he added a silver medal at the Para Fencing World Cup in Sao Paulo in the men’s individual epee B.

He has led the sport in the United States, earning more than 35 international medals and numerous national titles. He has also contributed to the sport as a nationally rated referee, armourer, and bout committee member. He serves on USA Fencing’s International Relations Committee, representing the organisation’s interests on the international stage.

Off the piste, Rodgers holds a PhD in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech and is a recognised expert in integrated optics and nanophotonics. His work includes 11 patents and a 2007 Department of the Navy Top Scientists and Engineers award.

“Scott’s election is a proud moment for our community,” USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews said. “As our first active athlete — and first leader from our growing Para fencing community — to chair the Board, he brings athlete-centred insight, competitive excellence, and inclusive leadership.

“I also appreciate Scott bringing his experience as a referee, executive, and 30-year fencer. I look forward to working with him and our entire board to serve our athletes, coaches, parents, club owners, tournament officials, and the entire USA Fencing ecosystem.”

Rodgers succeeds Damien Lehfeldt as Chair of the Board of Directors. Lehfeldt had served in the role since September 2024.
