Each day leading up to the awards, we are previewing a different category, and in this article are highlighting those nominated for Best Female, based on their performances at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) will host the 2013 Paralympic Sport Awards in Athens, Greece, on Saturday (23 November). The awards, proudly partnered by the IPC’s International Partner Allianz, will include six awards categories: Best Female Debut, Best Male Debut, Best Female, Best Male, Best Team and Best Official.

Each day leading up to the awards, we are previewing a different category, and in this article are highlighting those nominated for Best Female, based on their performances at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Nominees:

Yunidis Castillo (Cuba): At London 2012, she became Cuba’s most successful Paralympian, winning three sprint golds in the 100m, 200m and T46 events – all in world-record times.

Terezhina Guilhermina (Brazil): The visually impaired sprinter won 100m and 200m T11 Paralympic gold, breaking a world record in the shorter distance.

Zahra Nemati (Iran): She became the first Iranian woman to win either Olympic or Paralympic gold, taking first place in London in archery in the women’s individual recurve W1/W2.

Esther Vergeer (Netherlands): The Dutch wheelchair tennis star concluded one of Paralympic sport’s most successful careers with a fourth Paralympic singles title, and she also won gold in doubles.

Yu Chui Yee (Hong Kong): The wheelchair fencer claimed individual golds in the epee and foil category A events at London 2012, as well as a bronze in the team event.
