In 2013 the first Open European Championships in six years were held in Alexin, Russia.

Featuring new weight categories introduced after London 2012, the hosts dominated the medals table with a total of 18 that included nine golds.

They were followed by Iraq and Poland.

Stand-out performances include France’s Souhad Ghazouani who lifted four kilograms more than her Paralympic Games performance the year before and Turkish Paralympic Champion Nazmiye Muslu.

Muslu set and broke the women’s up to 41kg world record twice on the opening day of competition, setting the bar high for the rest of the event.
