32 World-Record Holders Head to IPC Euros

Poland, Ukraine and Germany are all sending large numbers of current world-record holders to the IPC Athletics European Championships in Stadskanaal. 20 Jun 2012

Of those 32 record holders, six come from Poland ,four from Ukraine and three from Germany, and all of these nations could turn some heads in Stadskanaal with their experienced delegations.

There will be 32 current world-record holders competing at the 2012 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics European Championships in Stadskanaal, the Netherlands, where it is expected that a slew of new top marks could be set when the five-day competition begins on Sunday (24 June).

Of those 32 record holders, six come from Poland and four from Ukraine and three from Germany, and all of these nations could turn some heads in Stadskanaal with their experienced delegations.

Poland’s Marcin Awizen will be the one to beat in the 800m T46 race, an event he set the world record in with a time of 1:52.36 at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

Rafal Kovc and Barbara Niewiedzial of Poland hold the top marks in the men’s and women’s 1,500m T20 events with times of 3:54.07 and 4:24.85, respectively.

In the field events, Poland expects a strong showing from three world-record holders: Tomasz Rebisz in the men’s Shot Put F46, Ewa Durska in the women’s Shot Put F20 and Karolina Kuchorcyzk in the women’s Long Jump F20.

For Ukraine, Inna Stryzhak will look to better her mark of 13.43 in the 100m T38 at the Beijing 2008 Games, and Mariaa Pomazan hopes to out-do her own top distance of 10.61m in the Shot Put F35.

In the men’s Long Jump F42, Germany’s Markus Rehm is aiming to better his top mark of 7.09m in the F44 class that he set at last year’s World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Russia, meanwhile, is sending three world-record holders to the Championships and Great Britain and Finland will each have two. Spain, Sweden, Croatia Denmark, Russia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Italy, Belarus and Lithuania will all have one world-record holder there.
