Antoni Ponce is Allianz Athlete of the Month

Spain’s Antoni Ponce has been voted the Allianz Athlete of the Month for June after his accomplishment on the World Para Swimming World Series circuit.

Ponce was champion of the men’s individual World Series for the first time. He dethroned Brazil’s most decorated Paralympian Daniel Dias who had won the two first editions.

Ponce received 55 per cent of the public votes. Brazil’s blind footballer Raimundo Mendes was second with 31 per cent, while Singapore’s archer Nur Syahidah Alim was third with 10 per cent.

German sprinter Johannes Floors and Egyptian table tennis player Mohamed Sameh Eid Saleh were also nominated.

The 2019 winners are:

January – Jeroen Kampschreur, NED, alpine skiing

February – Yujie Li, CHN, taekwondo

March – Lisa Bunschoten, NED, snowboard

April – Michael Roeger, AUS, athletics

May – Koji Sugeno, JPN, wheelchair tennis

June – Antoni Ponce, ESP, swimming
