Sprinter Lindy Ave has been honoured with Germany’s Youth Para athlete of the Year Award. The 19-year-old was recognised for her achievements at the London 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in July.

Ave won the silver medal in the women’s 200m T38 and the bronze medal in the 100m T38 at the British capital. She was only 3 cm short from the bronze medal in the long jump T38 final. Additional to that, the German reached personal bests in all three events.

The Neubrandenburg-born competed in her first Paralympic Games at Rio 2016, finishing fourth in the 4x100m relay T35-58, fifth in the 100m T38 and sixth in the long jump T38.

Next year Ave will have the chance to compete in front of the home crowd when Berlin hosts the World Para Athletics European Championships from 20-26 August.

Now she joins a list of successful German Para athletes who have also received the Youth Awards, such as Heinrich Popow (Para athletics, 2002), Christiane Reppe (Para swimming, 2004), Anna Schaffelhuber (Para alpine skiing, 2010) and Johannes Floors (Para athletics, 2015).

The Award Ceremony took place in Cologne on 14 October. The Young Athlete of the Year Award was launched in 1978. The prize for Para athletes was created in 2000.
