Juan Carlos Garrido was chosen to carry Chile’s flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games at Maracana Stadium, on 7 September.

In 2014, the 36-year-old powerlifter won gold at the Santiago Para South American Games and finished fifth at the World Championships. Garrido later went on to claim the Parapan American title in the men’s up to 59kg, in Toronto, in 2015.

Now, he is hoping to reach the Paralympic podium for the first time.

“I am extremely proud of having this opportunity to carry my country’s flag at the Paralympic Games,” he said.

“It is a huge honour. Climbing onto the Paralympic podium in Rio would be the cherry on top of the cake.”

Track and field athlete Cristian Valenzuela was the Chilean flagbearer at the 2012 Paralympics.
