Iran were crowned Super 6 champions in front of an ecstatic home crowd

The Iranian sitting volleyball team emerged triumphant on home soil in the city of Tabriz at the inaugural men’s Super 6 following a thrilling 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 28-26) victory over Russia* in the gold-medal match in front of 1,200 cheering fans.

The Rio 2016 Paralympic gold medallists had already beaten Russia 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-17) in their opening game, followed by victories over reigning world champions Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 15-13), Ukraine 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18), Germany 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-15) and USA 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-17).

Bosnia & Herzegovina collected bronze after defeating Ukraine 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-20), while Germany ended fifth following a 3-1 (25-18, 31-29, 23-25, 25-19) triumph over USA.

*Editor's note: The International Paralympic Committee suspended the Russian Paralympic Committee on 7 August 2016 for its inability to fulfil its IPC membership responsibilities and obligations, in particular its obligation to comply with the IPC Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Code (to which it is also a signatory). As a result of the suspension, Russian athletes cannot enter IPC sanctioned events or competitions, including the Paralympic Games.
