IWAS President Paul DePace to serve four more years

Estonia, Libya and Haiti will join IWAS, while wheelchair fencer Radoslaw Stanczuk received one of the organisation’s most prestigious awards. 26 Sep 2013

The Juan Palau Award was given to Poland’s Radoslaw Stanczuk for showing outstanding sportsmanship during the wheelchair fencing tournament at London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Paul DePace has been re-elected unopposed for a further four-year term of office as the IWAS President. He was voted to lead the organisation again at the IWAS General Assembly held in Stadskanaal, the Netherlands.

New IWAS Executive Board members elected included Russia’s Pavel Rozhkov the Czech Republic’s Radka Kucirkova.

There are now more than 60 member nations of IWAS, as Estonia and Libya were both ratified during the General Assembly, while Haiti was also accepted to be a member as of 2014.

In addition, the Juan Palau Award was given to Poland’s Radoslaw Stanczuk for showing outstanding sportsmanship during the wheelchair fencing tournament at London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Newly elected Wheelchair Fencing Chairman Jakub Nowicki accepted the award on his behalf, which was presented by the widow of Juan Palau, Mercedes Soleti.

Palau was a member of the IWAS Executive Board for several years, but passed away in April 2011.

The Pursuit Trophy was awarded to Maura Strange who is a Member of the Paralympic Order for her lifetime work and dedication to IWAS and the Paralympic Movement. IWAS Honorary Treasurer and long-time friend Bob Paterson awarded her the Trophy.

Strange previously served as the Executive Director and Secretary General of IWAS until her retirement in September 2012.
