“I am really upset that I won’t be able to compete at the World Championships in Mexico. I thought I might have had time to recover but the competition came too soon for me."
Paralympic champion Bethany Firth has been forced to pull out of the World Para Swimming World Championships after suffering an ankle injury.
Firth, who is a triple S14 gold medallist from Rio 2016, was due to compete for Great Britain at the Championships in Mexico City from 30 September-6 October.
The 100m breastroke S14 world record holder said: “I am really upset that I won’t be able to compete at the World Championships in Mexico.
“I thought I might have had time to recover but the competition came too soon for me. I am working closely with the British Para-Swimming staff and Sports Institute Northern Ireland (SINI) to get back to my best for next year.
“The World Championships will still be an amazing competition and I want to wish my teammates the best of luck over there. I know they will be amazing.”
National Performance Director Chris Furber added: "I know that Bethany is disappointed to miss the World Championships but the time frame for recovery meant that she was not able to be ready for Mexico.
“Our medical team is working closely with SINI to ensure that she is following the best rehabilitation plan possible to ensure that her 2017/18 season runs smoothly.”
