Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Schedule Released

Australia is still seeking its first Paralympic gold in Wheelchair Rugby after finishing as runners-up at the Beijing 2008 Games.

All of the Wheelchair Rugby matches will be held at the Basketball Arena in the Olympic Park, which is one of the largest temporary venues ever built for any Games.

The International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) revealed the final schedule for the London 2012 Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby competition on Tuesday (24 July).

The teams competing for a the coveted Paralympic gold at the Basketball Arena in London will be Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Japan, Sweden, USA and host country Great Britain.

The tournament begins on 5 September with three days of pool play followed by two days of elimination rounds, concluding with the gold-medal game at 14:15 on 9 September.

The competition will open with world No. 1 and defending Paralympic champions USA taking on host nation Great Britain.

USA has finished first at every world championships and Paralympic Games since 2006, but the British will look to cause an upset in the early stages with the home crowd on their side.

Australia, silver medallists at the Beijing 2008 Games, will face Sweden in a showdown to open the second day of competition on 7 September. Currently world No. 2, Australia, led by Ryley Batt, is still in search of its first Paralympic gold.

The final day of pool play on 8 September features top matchups between Australia and Belgium, as well as Great Britain and Japan.
