Swimmer Pin Xiu Yip has been selected to carry Singapore’s flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The 24-year-old, who won gold in the 50m backstroke S3 and silver in the 50m freestyle S3 at Beijing 2008, shined at last May’s Funchal 2016 European Open Championships, where she set two world records on her way to gold in both the 50m and 100m backstroke S2.

Rio 2016 will be the third Paralympic Games for Yip, who finished fourth in the 50m and 100m freestyle S3 at London 2012.

Speaking to Channel News Asia, Singapore’s Rio 2016 Paralympics Chef de Mission Ho Cheng Kwee said: “The team of Para athletes we have selected have worked extremely hard to reach a level where they can compete against the best in the world.

"It is my privilege to lead such a team. I hope they have the support of all Singaporeans when they compete in Rio."
