Rome 2017: Italy and Hong Kong teams triumph

The Italian men's foil team secured the gold at the 2017 IWAS Wheelchair Fancing World Championships in Rome

Team events kicked off at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing World Championships, with hosts Italy and Hong Kong celebrating golds on Friday (10 November), day four in Rome.

The 2017 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Championships are being streamed live on Raisport.

Halfway through the finals bouts in the men’s foil, Emanuele Lambertini gave Team Italy a big boost with his victory over Russia’s Albert Kamalov*. The rising star then closed the last bout with a win over Russian Nikita Nagaev* to secure Italy the gold medal in a final score of 45-38.

Rio 2016 silver medallists Poland defeated France 45-39 for the bronze medals. Michal Nalewajek especially gave the Polish squad a cushion in the second-to-last bout beating Ludovic LeMoine, while Dariusz Pender sealed the deal over Damien Tokatlian.

The women’s epee team event was a close race between Hong Kong and Russia*. Ng Justine Charissa and Alena Evdokimova evened the score with their battle, setting up Hong Kong’s Yu Chui Yee and Russia’s Iuliia Maya* in the deciding duel. It was Yu who collected two crucial hits to secure her team the gold medal with a final score of 45-43. The Hungarian women breezed past Poland 45-26 for the bronze.

Two more individual competitions took place in Rome on Friday.

Top-ranked Ukrainian Serhii Shavkun cruised over Russia’s Sergey Barinov* 15-6 for the men’s epee category C title.

In the women’s foil category C, Russian Ksenia Ovsyannikova* did likewise to Germany’s Ulrike Lotz-Lange 15-7 for the gold medal.

The 2017 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Championships continue on Saturday (11 November) with the women’s foil team, men’s sabre team; and women’s epee category C and men’s foil category C events.

The Championships run until Sunday (12 November).
