The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has announced details of the 62 municipalities from across Japan which have offered to voluntarily participate in the Operation BATON sustainability programme.
This initiative aims to build the Olympic and Paralympic Village Plaza using timber locally produced in the participating municipalities.
‘Sustainability’ and ‘engaging all of Japan’ are the key driving forces behind this project. After the Tokyo Games, the Plaza will be dismantled and the timber will return to each of the municipalities for re-use.
The Village Plaza will be one of the main facilities within the Athletes’ Village, as well as the venue for team welcome ceremonies, which will put it on the spotlight for some days. The Plaza will house a media centre, cafés, florist and general shops; and provide services to the athletes, visiting accredited Olympic and Paralympic families, members of the media and guests.
