Swimming World Championships Begin in Brazil

The first day of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships 25m saw a list of several World records being filled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In the Men’s 400m Freestyle (S7), Australia’s Matthew John Levy set an impressive World record with his time of 4:51.54. Following Levy were Alex Dionne (USA) and Ronaldo Souza Santos (BRA) finishing 14.91s and 24.36s later respectively. USA’s Mallory Weggemann also set a World record in the Women’s 400m Freestyle (S7) with her time of 5:08.53. Weggemann was followed by USA’s Cortney Jordan and Erin Popovich respectively. In the S7 category of the Women’s 400m Freestyle, Great Britain’s Eleanor Simmonds took home the gold with her time of 5:32.45.

Russia’s Konstantin Lisenkov set a Word record in the Men’s 100m Backstroke (S8) with a time of 1:04.56. Lisenkov was followed by Great Britain’s Thomas Young and Australia’s Peter Alan Stuart Leek respectively. In the Women’s 50m Freestyle (S4), USA’s Cheryl Angelelli finished first with her time of 52.26. Angelelli was followed by Sweden’s Jennie Ekstrom and Poland’s Karolina Hamer respectively.

In the Women’s 100m Butterfly (S9), a World record was set by Spain’s Sarai Gascon Moreno with her time of 1:07.21. Moreno was followed by Australia’s Annabelle Williams in second, and Great Britain’s Stephanie Millward in third. In the Men’s 100m Butterfly (S10), a World record was also set by host country’s Andre Brasil Esteves with his time of 54.76. Esteves was followed by Spain’s David Levecq Vives in second and Mike Van der Zanden from the Netherlands in third.
