Ticket sales for Rio 2016 Paralympic Games pass one million mark

The surge in ticket sales for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games that begun after the Olympic Games has maintained momentum, passing the one million mark on Monday (29 August).

Rio 2016 sold 133,000 tickets last Tuesday (23 August), which was a new record for the Rio 2016 Organising Committee, beating the previous best day of 123,000 Olympic tickets sold. The following day (24 August) then saw 145,000 Paralympic Games tickets sold, taking the total sold to about 800,000 of the 2.5 million tickets available.

As the feel-good factor generated by the successful hosting of the Olympic Games – and by Brazil’s gold medal success in beach volleyball, football and volleyball in the last few days of competitions – continues to be felt in the city, strong sales continued over the weekend.

Rio 2016 ticket director Donovan Ferreti said: “We are very pleased to have passed the one million mark, it really shows that Brazilians are engaging with the Paralympic Games. There have been queues at our ticket offices and you can feel the excitement building around the city. There are still many tickets left to see these fantastic and inspiring athletes, and the best way to do so is through the Rio 2016 ticket portal.”

There are no longer tickets available for 95 sessions. The initial allocations of tickets for track cycling, football 5-a-side and triathlon have been sold out, although more tickets could be made available soon. Sales have also been particularly strong in swimming, athletics, wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball.
