The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) sat down with Olympic gold medallist Koji Murofushi (hammer throw), touching on his successful career, which then led him on to his current functions as a WADA Athlete Committee member and Director of Sport for Tokyo 2020

Following on from previous WADA Talks interviews with Sir Craig Reedie, Kirsty Coventry, Francis Dodoo, Francesco Ricci Bitti, David Howman and Lauryn Williams, the three-time Olympian Murofushi shared his views on his family’s sporting background, his gold medal win in Athens 2004 and the importance of the spirit of sport.

In the interview, Murofushi tells WADA what led him to his successful career in athletics, his personal story of vindication and the importance of WADA’s Athlete Committee as guardians of sport.

On the topic of the spirit of sport, Murofushi says: “Sport is not just about getting a medal: we all have our own goal and cause, which I always teach young athletes in my lectures. The goal is important – getting a gold medal, for example – but so is the cause that drives you and motivates you, like encouraging others in time of need.”

WADA Talks sees the agency’s Senior Manager, Media Relations and Communications, Ben Nichols interviewing leading figures from the athlete community, sport, government and anti-doping community, as well as other partners involved in the clean sport movement.
