The first-ever Paralympic Games medals in the history of the sport of Ecuador were widely covered by local media, featuring the performance as "historic". Poleth and Anais Mendes won the gold and medal bronze, respectively, in the athletics shot put F20 event.

Both newspapers "El Universo", from Ecuadorian capital Quito, and "El Comercio", from Guayaquil, published the same word on their headlines to describe the performance.

The Ecuadorian ministry of sport (@DeporteEc) showed a video of the medal ceremony.

After the medal ceremony, Poleth said she "cannot believe" in what she had accomplished.

"It’s so important. But I still cannot believe it. It’s something that I can’t explain. I am very happy,” affirmed the gold medallist.

Her sister Anais was very proud as well:

“It’s a huge pride. This is our first (Paralympic) Games and we got two medals.”

Other countries that conquered a first medal in history in the Paralympic Games were Ethiopia, El Salvador and Sri Lanka.
