As we head towards July’s World Para Athletics Championships in London, Great Britain, it’s time to take a look at the key contenders. Next up in the 2017 ‘Ones to Watch’ series is South African sprinter Ilse Hayes.

Five Facts about Ilse Hayes

1. The South African has won two Paralympic and six world titles across the 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump T13.

2. This summer’s World Para Athletics Championships will be Hayes’ final competition – after the Championships she plans to retire from track and field.

3. Hayes has completed a Sports Science degree and honours in Pediatric Sciences.

4. In 2015, Hayes broke the 100m T13 world record, holding the title of fastest ever female Paralympian for a few months before T12 sprinter Omara Durand went faster still.

5. In 2013, she was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga by the President of South Africa Jacob Zuma for her sporting achievements.
