Fleur Jong flies high at L'Hospitalet 2022

Paralympic champion Fleur Jong was the star of the 17th edition of the L’Hospitalet International Meeting which took place on Saturday (28 May) in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, near Barcelona in Spain.

Right in the first event of the morning, the Dutch athlete broke the women’s long jump T62 world record* with 6.23m improving in 7 centimetres her own mark from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. 

“Amazing start of the season,” Jong posted on social media after the event.

Neary 200 athletes competed at L’Hospitalet 2022, one of the most traditional Para athletics meetings in the international circuit. 

Another Paralympic long jump champion and world record holder to triumph in Spain was Germany’s Markus Rehm who finished first with a 8.15m-jump. 

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist in the men’s 1500m T13, Tunisia’s Rouay Jebabli impressed in L’Hospitalet Nord winning the race in 3:47.85, a result that would have given him gold in Japan last year. 

DOUBLE GOLD TO IGLESIAS

Three Spanish athletes set new national records, including two from local club L’Hospitalet Atletisme. Maria Zamora achieved the mark in the women’s shot put F12 and Ivan Soriano in the men’s 100m T37. 

Fernando Robles was the other Spanish runner to set a national record for the men’s 100m T63 in a multiclass race won by South Africa’s Mpumelelo Mhlongo. 

Tokyo 2020 champion in the women’s 100m T13, Adiaratou Iglesias put Spain on the top of the podium in the 100m and 200m. 

Sara Andres Barrio in the women’s 100m and long jump, Jorge Madera in the men’s 800m and 1500m, Gerard Descarrega in the 400m and Kim Lopez in the shot put and discuss were the other Spanish Paralympic and World Championships medallists to triumph at L’Hospitalet 2022.
