At the ceremony, which was broadcast live in parts of Africa, Abraham Tarbei was honoured for his gold and bronze-medal performances in athletics at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Tarbe won 1,500m T46 gold in a world-record time of 3:50.15 and 800m T46 bronze in a season-best time of 1:53.03.
