Mexico City 2017: Closing Ceremony speech

Good afternoon Mexico City!

You did it! Just 80 days after a devastating earthquake hit this beautiful city, you successfully staged one of the biggest Para sport events ever to take place outside of the Paralympic Games.

You have made history.

Never before have two Para sport World Championships been brought together and staged as one, but you have done it here in Mexico City. You can all be very proud of your involvement in the 2017 Para Sport Festival.

The passion, character and commitment of the Mexican people is unique, you embody more than most the essence of Paralympic Spirit. Following September’s earthquake you made the delivery of these Championships a matter of principle and a matter of honour, your pride and determination shone throughout the world. The festive atmosphere at this historical venue, with the public chanting and supporting their favourite athletes helped the athletes give their best. Thank you, Mexico!

In return, we wanted to give back to you. Through #FuerzaMexico, IPC staff, our members, together with sizeable donations from Allianz and Swans, raised USD 40,000 for UNICEF Mexico to help with relief efforts in this country.

This week sport has once again shown its wonderful ability to provide unity and hope.

Athletes, you have built on your successes at Rio 2016; you have raised the bar even higher in terms of athletic performance. Credit must go to you, your coaches and your National Paralympic Committees for making you the tremendous athletes and role models that you are.

Thank you to the Mexico 2017 Organising Committee, City and Federal Government, Mexican Paralympic Committee and every single delivery partner for staging this event.

Thank you to the World Para Powerlifting staff, officials and of course the amazing volunteers. Without you events like this simply would not happen.

To the media and broadcasters covering this event, thank you for sharing the stories of the athletes and the performances that ultimately will change attitudes towards disability.

Finally, the time has come for me to declare the Mexico City 2017 World Para Powerlifting Championships closed. I call upon athletes all over the world to meet again in Astana, Kazakhstan, in 2019, where once again, you will inspire and excite the world with your sporting excellence.

¡Buenas tardes, México! Boa tarde, México! Good afternoon, Mexico!

Ustedes han hecho historia. Solo 80 días después del devastador terremoto que golpeó esta hermosa ciudad, organizaron con éxito uno de los más grandes eventos del Para deporte que jamás se hayan realizado fuera de los Juegos Paralímpicos.

¡Felicitaciones!

Nunca antes dos Campeonatos Mundiales de Para deporte se habían celebrado en conjunto, pero ustedes lo hicieron realidad aquí en la Ciudad de México. Pueden sentirse orgullosos por el importante rol que cumplieron en este evento, de la misma manera que nosotros, y yo personalmente como latinoamericano, nos sentimos orgullosos por haber sido parte de él.

La pasión, el coraje y el compromiso del pueblo mexicano son únicos. Ustedes representan más que muchos la esencia del Espíritu Paralímpico. Luego del terremoto, ustedes hicieron de la realización de estos Campeonatos Mundiales una cuestión de principios y de honor.

Su orgullo y su determinación se propagaron por cada rincón del mundo, siendo reconocidos y admirados por todos. ¡Viva México!

Un ambiente festivo se respiró en este histórico recinto deportivo durante los últimos siete días gracias al público mexicano, quien con su calidez y hospitalidad hizo que los atletas se sintieran motivados para dar lo mejor de sí.

Por dicha razón es que quisimos hacerle al pueblo mexicano una retribución. A través de #FuerzaMéxico, el staff del Comité Paralímpico Internacional y nuestros miembros, junto con generosas donaciones de Allianz y Swans, recaudamos 40.000 dólares estadounidenses que le entregamos a UNICEF México para ayudar con los esfuerzos humanitarios en este país.

Esta semana, el deporte ha demostrado una vez más su maravillosa habilidad para generar unidad y esperanza.

Atletas, ustedes han logrado elevar la vara aún más en cuanto a nivel deportivo. Los felicito a ustedes, a sus entrenadores y a sus Comités Paralímpicos Nacionales por ayudarlos a convertirse en grandes atletas y, aún más importante, en verdaderos modelos a seguir.

Gracias al Comité Organizador de Ciudad de México 2017, a los Gobiernos Nacional y de la Ciudad, al Comité Paralímpico Mexicano, Moveo-Lab y cada uno de los socios por superar las adversidades y organizar este evento.

Gracias al staff de World Para Powerlifting, oficiales técnicos y, obviamente, a los voluntarios. Sin su invaluable aporte, este tipo de eventos no podrían hacerse realidad.

A los medios y televisoras cubriendo los Mundiales, gracias por compartir las historias y actuaciones de los atletas, que en última instancia ayudarán a generar conciencia en la sociedad y cambiar percepciones en torno a la discapacidad.

Finalmente, ha llegado el momento para mí de declarar cerrado el Campeonato Mundial de Para Powerlifting Ciudad de México 2017. Los invito a todos ustedes powerlifters del mundo a reencontrarse en Astana, Kazakstán, en 2019, donde sin dudas inspirarán y emocionarán al mundo con su excelencia deportiva una vez más.
