My Holiday Hotspot with South Africa’s Ilse Hayes

“We came across the most scenic sunsets, beaches, waterfalls and just a day after being in a bikini we took a hike between glaziers.”

This week’s Holiday Hotspot comes from South African sprinter and multiple world and Paralympic champion Ilse Hayes.

The 31-year-old clinched two silver medals at Rio 2016 to add to the five Paralympic medals – which includes two golds – that she won across three previous Games.

Hayes, who competes in the T13 class, unwound after Rio with a memorable trip to New Zealand – here she explains why that is her Holiday Hotspot:

“I love nature and this country has ample of it. Every day we just discovered more and more natural wonders.

“We came across the most scenic sunsets, beaches, waterfalls and just a day after being in a bikini we took a hike between glaziers. If you are into adventure stuff this is definitely the destination for you!”

Two essentials I would take:

Sunscreen. On the first day a local warned us against the sun, but we assured him we are used to the African sun. Not the same - the sun in New Zealand is potent!

The second thing is loads of energy. There is so much to do, so sleep when you are dead. You have to get up early in the morning, do your workout and explore the rest of the day. You will always find something according to your mood or taste...old or young, it’s amazing.
