Multiple Paralympic and world champion Sherif Osman led Egypt to victory in the first mixed team event at the Nur-Sultan 2019 World Para Powerlifting Championships which concluded on Saturday.

In the final against Brazil, Osman lifted an impressive 185kg after two-time world champion Rehab Ahmed had opened with a 100kg lift. Mohamed Elelfat later cleared the bar at 200kg to take gold.

Brazil only managed one successful lift through Mariana D’Andrea, who pushed 100kg, finishing second.

“It was an interesting event. I am very happy to help Egypt get the gold,” said Osman, who days before claimed the Nur-Sultan 2019 individual gold in the men’s up to 59kg.

Despite losing the final, Brazilian Bruno Carra left happy for having competed in the first mixed team event, assuring innovations are necessary.

“It motivates powerlifters to push harder. This new event gave us an extra opportunity to perform. This kind of events also unite the teams and we play for a common objective.

“I hope next few years we have more teams participating.”

Ukraine claimed bronze after defeating Colombia.

In the overall Nur-Sultan 2019 standings, China finished first with 16 medals, including seven golds, eight silvers and one bronze. Nigeria (3-3-2) and Iran (3-3-1) completed the top three.

Iran still secured the overall men’s trophy, while China took the women’s.

A total of five world and 25 regional records were set throughout the World Championships.
