Russian NPC presents awards, opens new headquarters

To coincide with the awards, the Committee also opened its new fully accessible headquarters in Moscow city centre, the first dedicated home in its history.

The Russian Paralympic Committee hosted its annual IX Return to Life Awards on Wednesday (3 December), honouring the outstanding achievements of a range of contributors from within the Russian Paralympic Movement at major international competitions in 2014.

To coincide with the awards, the Committee also opened its new fully accessible headquarters in Moscow city centre, the first dedicated home in its history.

A number of athletes, coaches, medical and support staff who were part of the success of the Russian national team in 2014, which included finishing top of the medals table at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, were commended:

- Standing Point Award – Alexander Nazarov, head coach of the Russian national alpine skiing team and Valery Redkozubov, two-time Paralympic champion skier

- Life is a Life Award – Abdula Kuramagamedov, 2014 IBSA Judo World Championships gold medallist

- I Love you, Life Award– Mikhalina Lysova, triple Paralympic champion and three-time silver medallist from Sochi 2014

- Second Breath Award – Dmitry Kokarev, three-time European champion and double silver medallist from the 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships

- And Life, And Tears, And Love Award – Dmitry Lisov, part of the Sochi 2014 ice sledge hockey silver medal winning squad, and his wife Ekaterina

- Power In Will Award – Alexey Obydennov, double para-cycling world champion

- By Personal Example – Russian national ice sledge hockey team

- Twist of Fate Award– Roman Fedyaev, two-time world champion and bronze medallist in wheelchair fencing

- Overcoming Award – Russian women’s goalball team, silver medallists from the 2014 IBSA Goalball World Championships

- Return To Life Award – Roman Petushkov, most decorated athlete from Sochi 2014

In addition, the Russian Paralympic Committee organised a working session on developing sports for athletes with high support needs attended by the Presidents of International Organisations of Sport for the Disabled and National Paralympic Committees.

During the working session the President of the Russian Federation of Sports for Persons with Physical Disabilities, Lev Seleznev, and President of the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sport Federation, Paul DePace, signed the contract for the 2015 IWAS World Games in Sochi.

The 2015 IWAS World Games will be held from 26 September-3 October.

Sports that will be included in the Games are archery, arm wrestling, athletics, para-taekwondo, swimming and table tennis.
