“I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time. To many classifiers he was a father figure and mentor known for his thorough and grounded style. He will be sadly missed.”

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has sent its condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Aart Kruimer, an international classifier in numerous sports, who sadly passed away due to heart failure on 25 December 2013.

Aart, a caring doctor, lecturer and trainer, was a hugely committed and widely respected classifier specialising in cerebral palsy for the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA), IPC Athletics and IPC Ice Sledge Hockey, in his native Netherlands and around the world.

Known for his superb sense of humour and infectious smile, Aart had a vast knowledge of classification, decades of experience and was an expert in bio mechanics and sport for people with an impairment.

He was instrumental in the development of the IPC Classification Code, which was adopted in 2007, and acted as a senior advisor to the IPC on many classification research projects.

As the former classification and medical director for the ITTF, he is credited with leading the team which modernised the table tennis classification system and implemented various innovations which led to changes in the standing and sitting classes.

Sir Philip Craven, IPC President, said: “This is very tragic news as Aart was a hugely popular figure known by many as one of the world’s leading classifiers.

“I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time. To many classifiers he was a father figure and mentor known for his thorough and grounded style. He will be sadly missed.”

His funeral will take place on Thursday 2 January 2014 in Huizen, the Netherlands.
