Editor’s note: Each sport on the Rio 2016 Paralympic programme will have a dedicated week of featured content published on paralympic.org. Every week a new sport will be featured and the series will run until September’s Games, helping the public understand more about the 22 sports being contested in Rio.

Wheelchair basketball will take place in two venues, both located in the Barra Olympic Park. The Carioca Arena 1 will host the sport and is conveniently located for the athletes, as it is five minutes from the Paralympic Village. During the Olympic Games, the arena will host basketball, and then wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby during the Paralympic Games.

The Rio Olympic Arena, Rio’s largest indoor arena, will also host wheelchair basketball competitions. During the Olympics, the venue is the site of gymnastics. The stadium was unveiled on 12 January and has already hosted trial events to ensure it is ready for the Paralympic and Olympic events.

Wheelchair basketball will be contested between 8-17 September, with two medal events and 264 athletes expected to compete.
