World medallists gather for Cairo 2023 World Cup
Paralympic and reigning world champion Ahmed will lead the home challenge in absence of Osman as 62 lifters from 11 nations to vie for glory 02 Nov 2023A little more than two months after the Dubai 2023 World Para Powerlifting World Championships, world champions and medallists will re-unite in Cairo as the Egyptian capital is ready to stage its first international competition over the next three days.
Sixty-two athletes from 11 nations will be competing in 20 weight categories and three team events, stirring up the Cairo 2023 World Para Powerlifting World Cup. The hosts will have the largest delegation of 31 (half of the total number of participants) that will be spearheaded two-time Paralympic medallist Rehab Ahmed.
Ahmed, a three-time consecutive world champion and two-time Paralympic silver medallist in the women’s up to 50kg, is writing a new chapter in her career now. She debuted in a new category, the women’s up to 55kg, at the Dubai 2023 and emerged the best.
Remarkable win
Her win was remarkable for the team as it was the only gold for Egypt at the Dubai 2023 championships.
At home, Ahmed will be in action in the individual event and in the mixed team event in which she will performing alongside other two Egyptian medallists at the Worlds, Mohamed Elelfat and Mohamed Elmenyawy.
Both Elelfat and Elmenyawy gabbed a bronze medal at Dubai 2023 respectively in the men’s up to 88kg and up to 59kg. They will also be competing in their individual categories on the opening day of Cairo 2023.
Other strong names
Fatma Korany (women’s up to 61kg) and Nadia Ali (women’s up to 86kg) are other strong names who added medals to the Egypt’s haul at Dubai 2023 and now will be representing the hosts at Cairo 2023.
Among the visitors, Georgia is the nation with eight representatives to land on the Pyramid’s land, followed by Algeria with six athletes. The other eight participants are divided from two continents. Italy, Hungary, Moldova, and Estonia representing Europe and Ghana, Guinea, Malawi, and Namibia from Africa.
